A friend sent me an article this week which illustrates just how bad things can get when separated parents don’t communicate with each other. According to an article in a Michigan, USA paper a three-year old was abandoned by his parents during his birthday party in a shopping center. Apparently, when Mom and Dad separately left the party, each was sure that their child was with the other parent. It took them a couple of days to figure out that he was not.

By devising and agreeing on a parenting plan that splits holiday time between them, perhaps with a handover on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Alternatively they can decide that in even years the kids will be with Dad for Christmas while odd years will spent with Mom. If parents are on good terms they may even agree to spend a few hours together on Christmas Day so that neither has to miss the children opening their presents.
